Goat is the host of choice for producing polyclonal antibodies in larger amounts. The goat produces about 7-8 times the amount of serum compared to the rabbit. Furthermore, the goat serum contains about 20 mg/ml of total IgG, which is about 2-3 times more than rabbit serum. This makes the goat the more cost effective choice of the two when larger amounts of antibody are required. What is more, you will receive material from a single animal, rather than several different individuals. In terms of antibody amounts, the chicken is the only economical rival.
Throughout these pages we are stressing the importance of quality in all steps of the production. Due to the technical nature of the topic, much focus has been put on the production of high quality peptides, and how peptide quality applies to antibody production. However, there are other aspects of quality. For hosts like rabbits and chicken for which start-up costs are comparably low, animals are never recycled, i.e. the animals are used for a single project an then terminated. Since the goat should be about 1-2 years old before it is immunised, it is a large upfront investment and the recycling of animals is a common strategy in order to keep costs down. But the quality is likely to be affected by this practise. We strongly recommend the use of premium goats, that is, goats that have not previously been used for antibody production. Considering that the goat is used for large scale production, the added cost per mg of antibody is low and the benefits obvious.
Innovagen was founded in 1992 and in these years we have developed numerous custom antibodies in various hosts, where goats have been used more frequently for the large scale productions. You and your project will also benefit from our experience and commitment to quality when you turn to us for your custom antibody requirements.
