Polyclonal chicken antibodies, IgY

Using chickens as hosts for antibody production is becoming increasingly popular. It is not to be wondered at since there are several merits to chicken antibodies;

• Cost effective
  Chickens produce large amounts of antibody (IgY) in their eggs, making them very cost effective. A single egg yolk contains about 100 mg total IgY. This is comparable to the approximate amount of total IgG in 5 ml goat antiserum or 10 ml rabbit antiserum.
   
• Phylogenetic distance
  Due to the evolutionary differences, chickens may respond better than rabbits or goats to highly conserved mammalian antigens.
   
• Low backgrounds
  The chicken antibodies do not bind to the mammalian Fc receptor; which means very low background signals. IgY does not react with Rheumatoid Factors in mammalian serum which can cause false positives when analyzing auto-immune disease serum.
   
• IgY does not activate the mammalian complement pathway.
