Rat has traditionally been the choice of host when requiring an antibody produced in a second host different to rabbit. As rats have been routinely used for a long time, the entire apparatus from rat breeds, facilities, to immunisation protocols and secondary antibodies, have been thoroughly tested and evaluated for best performance. There are merits to using chicken, but unless antibody amounts or phylogenetic distance between the host and the species of the target protein are of importance, rats remain a commonly asked for host.
The typical yield is 3 ml of antiserum from a terminal bleed.
