Typically a number of balb/c mice are immunised for the purpose of producing monoclonal antibodies. Our standard protocol is used where the polyclonal response is evaluated by ELISA at intervals such that the fusion can be performed earlier while maintining the likelihood of obtaining a large number of positive clones. If you have a preference of immunisation schedule or what mouse strain to use, we should be able to accommodate you.
The main reason for not using other hosts is the limited availability of the required fusion partners. If there is a need, that cannot be overcome by royalty free Antibody engineering techniques (e.g. chimerisation), then we can look into immunisations of hosts other than mice for the producing monoclonal antibodies.
